James W. Lantz was born in 1827 in Frederick County, Maryland. His parents were Johannes Lantz (1798-1851) and Sarah Smelser (1797-1874). He married Eleanor Hyde (1828-1851), daughter of Isaac Hyde and Maria Lambert, 2 October 1851. Eleanor died 10 December 1851. He married Mary Ann Richardson 8 January 1853 in Carroll County, Maryland. They had six children. James died 14 April 1891 in New Windsor, Maryland.
