Tragedies oft-times bring out the best in people as was certainly the case in Charion County during the Great Flood of 1993. Citizens of towns in our county started and rekindled friendships that had been on hold during their busy lives. As the rivers were battled along levees and roads in the communities, it was proven many times over that good people live in rural Missouri. Citizens from neighboring towns pitched in to fill and stack sandbags on levees that were protecting valuable farm land and homes. When it was apparent that the flood water would violate homes and businesses in its path, volunteers helped citizens of Brunswick, Dalton, Triplett, Dean Lake, Whitham and Sumner move their valuables to higher ground. They unselfishly offered their time, vehicles and boats to flood victims, asking for and expecting nothing in return. "Living on the River" is a pictorial history of the Great Flood of 1993 in Chariton County and depicts its damage and lasting effect on the people of this area. 128 pages.
