Purpose of the Prerogative Court: The Prerogative Court was the central point for probate for Provincial Maryland. It was mirrored after the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. There was a judge as well as clerks of the court. Initially, all probate was brought directly to the Prerogative Court, located in the Provincial Capital. As the Province became more populous, all documents were still to be filed with the Prerogative Court; however, administration of probate was delegated to the various county courts. Even so, there are documents only in the Prerogative Court and not in the appropriate county, and vice versa. Documents filed in the Prerogative Court: The following documents were filed in the Prerogative Court: administration bond, will, inventory, administration accounts, and final balances. The testamentary proceedings contain the administration bond and the docket for the court. If the administrator is lax in filing documents, then a summons is also recorded. This volume is a continuation of the series, covering 1704-1707. 252 pages, full name index. Names include: Aisquith, Briscoe, Grundy, Lattimore, Pinckney, Veitch.

More Description

Volume X of Abstracts of the Testamentary Proceedings of the Prerogative Court of Maryland (1704Γ 1707), by V. L. Skinner, consists of abstracts of the records for the period 1704 to 1707. Mr. Skinner has combed through administration, bond, will, inventory, administration account, and final balance entries to produce this collection. The abstracts are arranged chronologically by court session. For the most part, the transcriptions state the names of the principals (testators, heirs, witnesses, administrators, and so forth) as well as details of bequests, names of slaves, appraisers, and more. In all, this volume refers to roughly 7,000 residents of the Province of Maryland between 1704 and 1707.
