This book is designed as an aid to the family historian by identifying ships from Scotland to what is now the United States and Canada for the period 1628-1828. Evidence of direct shipping between Scotland and the Americas can be established as early as 1600 when the "Grace of God" returned to Dundee from Newfoundland. Emigration to America from Scotland began with the attempt by Sir William Alexander to settle Nova Scotia in the 1620s. It is believed that although there were a number of vessels which could be described as "emigrant ships", the majority of emigrants during our period went on cargo ships. There seems to have been a continuous trickle of emigrants across the Atlantic from the mid-seventeenth century onwards. This work identifies who emigrated, how they emigrated, why they emigrated, plus their ports of departure and destination.
